About Norma Noordin

French    Spanish    Arabic

I have been a dedicated scout since 1998 with the Scouts Association of Malaysia, and exemplify a lifelong commitment to scouting principles, emphasizing personal growth, community engagement, and global collaboration. I achieved King’s Scout Award in my youth in 2002, a 4 year arduous journey where I demonstrated remarkable determination and diligence, all while maintaining both pluck and humility in my pursuit.

As my passion for scouting flourished, I assumed various leadership roles, ascending from Assistant District Commissioner to Deputy State Commissioner and eventually achieving the notable position of International Commissioner all while maintaining as an adult leader for two community based units. Notably, I made history by becoming the first female and under-40 member of the association’s senior management team. In my NSO, I chair the constitutional committee, undertaking a challenging task to review our constitution, policy, organisation and rules. I also spearhead initiatives in the areas of Spiritual Development and in Diversity & Inclusion and in Community Based Scouting. The skills I have honed while serving in these roles has humbly positioned me as an agent for international collaboration and as a global consultant.

As a WOSM Consultant in Diversity & Inclusion, I have had the pleasure of working with the Operational Framework of WOSM to develop content for the D&I Educational Methods Workstream (2020 – 2021) and further into supporting the Diversity and Inclusion Data Project (2023).

I am grateful for the opportunity to be trained as Trainer of WOSM Consultants in Istanbul (2022) being part of the Global Consultants Support Group where I have been involved in developing content for the WOSM Consultant’s e-learning and delivered the WOSM Consultant Training for the European Region on February 2023 in Frankfurt, Germany.

Education & Professional Life

Education:

2016 : BSc. Medical Bioscience (Monash University)

2022 – present  :  LLB Bachelor of Laws (University of London)

Profession:

Manager for Intellectual Property Enforcement at Pahamin & Pahamin, Advocate & Solicitors

Creative Director at Rangga Haus

Academic Director and Principal Surveyor at Ray Nautics Resources

I believe in intrapreneurial endeavours, hence keeping a full time job as Manager for Intellectual Property Enforcement at a legal firm whilst managing 2 enterprises: Rangga Haus (providing IT services) and Ray Nautics (maritime education, sail training and yacht surveys). Previously I worked as a Marine Surveyor(loss adjustor), a Corporate Research Executive focused on investigations such as background checks, due diligence, cyber forensics and market surveys, and a Project Manager in Branding & Social Media.

Even in my professional endeavours, I have the tendency to link it back to scouting. I sponsor the apprenticeship of rovers, sharing best practices and honing their skills in either digital marketing or yacht surveying and sail training (done on board my own yacht, a Hood-Wauqueize 38), preparing them for the working world. When I was the General Manager of Barista Guild Asia (leading specialty coffee school in Malaysia), I initiated the Jr Barista Award program for youths which pieced together the technical knowledge of specialty coffee, the best practices in the food and beverage industry, and the scout method to build good character and hone life skills.

I am a proud alumna of Monash University, holding a degree in Medical Bioscience. My first tertiary education was in Forensic Science & Analytical Chemistry at Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia. Continuing my educational journey, I am currently in second year of reading law with University of London.

International Humanitarian Efforts & Collaborations

Uganda Scouts Association 2024

Initiated and facilitated collaboration between the Scouts Association of Malaysia and the Uganda Scouts Association to explore on developing a framework to a sustainable marine scouts programme for the youths of Uganda. Ensuring the framework considers all factors such as being fit for purpose, safeguarding policy vis marine scouting and partnerships with local marine authorities are considered and not forgetting to link it all back to the vision for world scouting. This initiative shall see intentional scouting in the spirit of solidarity between the two NSOs.

Nepal Earthquake 2015

Together with the Malacca sea scout unit, we initiated to raise 800 units of portable water filters for the people of the Republic of Nepal. This effort involved partnering with NGOs such as the Dharma Shakti Organisation and Nepal Scouts, with particular assistance from Lalitpur District Scouts. The team and I personally delivered these filters to the outskirts of Kathmandu, reaching as far as Ramechap, a journey of 3 hours by off-road means, ensuring the villagers had access to clean water.

Uganda Street Scouts Project 2010

I collaborated with Uganda Scouts Association to raise funds for the secondary education of a female scout through their Street Scouts project. As a Capoeira instructor, I conducted public Capoeira classes (Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art) for a nominal fee per participant for one year, successfully raising the necessary funds for a young female scout to complete her education. Uganda Scouts Association regularly updates of her developments and I am happy to share that she is now an independent woman and managing her life well.
